Gareth Gates may quite possibly be the finest Joseph to grace the West End to date!
Bryan Fear, Polari Magazine
Pop Idol runner up, Gareth Gates stars in this revival of Webber and Rice's multi award winning and much loved hit. Packed with memorable numbers such as Any Dream Will Do and Close Every Door, Tim Rice's score uses and parodies a variety of musical styles. The Charleston (Potiphar), Disco (Go, Go, Joseph), Calypso (Benjamin Calypso), French Ballad (Those Canaan Days), and even Elvis inspired Rock 'n Roll (Song of the King) all feature. Definitely a musical that the entire family can enjoy.
Based on 'The Coat of Many Colours' parable from the Bible's Genesis, Joseph tells the story of how he is sold into slave hood by his brothers who are consumed with jealousy as their father bestowed the multi coloured coat on Joseph, a sign that he is the preferred one. Daubing Joseph's coat in goat's blood, they tell their father that Joseph has been killed Carted off to Egypt Joseph suffers mixed fortunes. First, rapidly rising through the slave ranks and becoming head of the Egyptian millionaire Potiphar's household, and then, when being caught by his owner talking to his wife, Potiphar wrongly presumes the worst and throws Joseph into jail. It is there that Joseph discovers he has a great talent of being able to interpret dreams.
The Pharaoh hears of this and send for Joseph, and before you can say 'Any Dream Will Do' Joseph becomes the most powerful man in Egypt. When his brothers turn up, begging, Joseph must decide whether he can forgive his brothers and reconcile himself with his father.
Joseph was originally a concept album and it was only after Lloyd Webber's father encouraged his son to develop it further, that the stage musical was written.
