Cutting to the heart of gender politics amidst tragedy

Why See Medea?

Plays

DIRECTED BY RUPERT GOOLD

Part of the Almeida Greeks season for 2015, the last play in the series takes on Greek tragedy's most infamous anti-heroine, played by Kate Fleetwood in her Almeida debut. Directed by multi award-winning Rupert Goold, fresh from his successful productions of King Charles III and American Psycho starring Matt Smith. Adapted by feminist writer Rachel Cusk, the play seeks to overturn the overly negative attitude towards a character driven to the edge of despair by her feckless husband.

what is it about?

Having abandoned her father's kingdom of Colchis for the love of Jason, the years have passed and their marriage is on the rocks. The cause? Jason has been betrothed to a princess to secure alliances. But where does this leave Medea and their two young sons, born out of wedlock? Determined to take back control of her life, Medea sets out on a course of pure destruction, with the sole intent of ruining Jason's life and causing him the worst pain imaginable. , Euripides' seminal play uncovers the heart of gender politics and asks the audience to consider what being a wife and a woman actual means for one's identity.
