Musicals

HOLLYWOOD FLAIR WITH A TWIST

Given that very few Hollywood stars of the golden-era would never admit to being gay for fear of the damage to their careers, this powerful musical, based on the true story of William Haines, surprises and inspires. Part love story, part expose on the double standards of Hollywood, A Tailor Made Man exhibits fast- talking rhythms and witticisms while its jaunty tunes and lyrics are catchy in their gentle pastiche of the era.

With a script by Maureen Lipman's daughter Amy Rosenthal and director Claudio Marco's keen eye for detail, this ebullient yet respectful portrayal of Haines is ably handled by an energetic ensemble cast; it includes Faye Tozer, of Steps fame, and film actor Dylan Turner in starring roles.

WHAT IS THE TAILOR MADE MAN ABOUT?

Set in 20's and 30's old school Hollywood, William Haines wins the New Faces of 1922 Competition and is immediately swept up by the bright lights and saccharine promises of the Silent Film studio machine. Amidst the control of over-bearing producers and studio-bosses, Haines rises as a certifiable star, going on to make 26 films in 11 years.

Early on in his career, he falls for winsome set painter Jimmy Shields and the pair's enduring bond becomes a point of contention with the antagonistic studio boss Louis B. Mayer. With the prospect of a cover-up marriage forced upon him, Haines remains unbowed in this heart-warming celebration of the unconventional.
