Why See Roman Tragedies?

PlaysShakespeare

Three Shakespearean epics combine!

Dutch stage master Ivo van Hove's innovative production splices three of Shakespeare's epic classical tragedies into an epic modern setting, with you, the audience free to move about. Staged as a live political event with non-stop news coverage projected upon the walls, be prepared to be sucked into the action as you watch tightly edited versions of Coriolanus, Julius Caesar and Antony and Cleopatra play out before you. It's Shakespeare as you've never expected.

One Politically Immersive epic

First premiering in Holland by celebrated company Toneelgroep in 2007, Shakespeare's trio of ancient political epics are condensed down into a live political event; think soliloquies at press conferences and high drama caught on camera and screened live back through huge television screens. Coming in at a little under six hours, this is a triple epic within an epic; however you won't be confined to your seats - you will be active participants when the drama breaks out around you. Shakespeare feels not only like our contemporary within this setting - he is more like a political force to be reckoned with!
