Blind Date

Blind Date at Charing Cross Theatre

Why see Blind Date?

A FLIGHT OF THEATRICAL FANCY

Direct from sold out runs in New York and Toronto, Canadian actress, improviser and theatre director Rebecca Northan writes and stars in this riotously funny comedy. Entirely based on improvisation, Rebecca's show boldly explores the overlap between improvised performance and blind dates - false starts, moments of connection and failure to communicate are but a few similarities. Stood up by an unseen love interest, Northan plays Mimi, an eccentric and loveable clown. In a defiant demonstration of pluck, she picks a new date from the audience.

As actor and audience member muddle their way through their first date, the show's simplicity and willingness to explore such an awkward subject becomes fascinating to behold. Northan unrelentingly drives the action forward but brings balance with her desire to create a truly organic performance, culminating in an entertaining and endearing production.

WHAT IS BLIND DATE ABOUT?

The freshly stood up Mimi trawls the audience for a suitable replacement date and the following 90 minutes tells the story of the couple's first meeting. Mimi overcomes what could be a terrifying prospect for an audience member by carefully steering the conversation, helping her date and the audience to feel safe enough to participate.

It is with warmth, kindness and a dash of mischief that Northan elicits an absorbing, touching and frequently hilarious evening. Despite her playfulness, Northan also gracefully extracts autobiographical details, emotions and opinions from her date, giving depth to what becomes a truly fascinating story about two strangers getting to know each other.
