Why See The Billie Holiday Story?

Musicals

Kristofferson dazzles as Holliday

Nina Kristofferson, though a Londoner, channels Billie Holliday of Philadelphia in her one-woman-show with such grace and ease that the suspension of one's disbelief is effortless. Kristofferson as Holliday takes the audience into 1940s downtown New York, and regales them with the heart-rending tales which inspired Holliday's music. Holliday's story is undeniably tragic; her life was a long series of drug and alcohol excesses, yet the music borne of these experiences, and the voice it produced, was unique, staggeringly beautiful, and clearly stands the test of time. Expect to hear classics such as God Bless The Child, Good Morning Heartache, Strange Fruit, Don?t Explain, and All of me delivered by Kristofferson with great verve.

Kristofferson, clearly in awe of Holliday, has perfected her mannerisms, both physical and vocal. This never reaches the point of cheap imitation however. Kristofferson overall is a consummate actor and singer, and her portrayal of Holliday is loving yet real, and therefore often not pretty. A brilliant show bursting with classic songs and moving tales, all delivered in a show-stopping performance.

What is The Billie Holliday Story about?

Billie Holliday was one of the world's best-loved artists. A pioneering jazz and blues singer most active in the 1940s, she moved the masses with her heartfelt crooning. However her life was unpredictable and tragic; something which was mirrored in her music. The Billie Holliday Story recounts these events and sings the songs in a dazzling one-woman-show.
