It may be seventeen years since Closer premiered in London, but Patrick Marber's four-hander about love, sex and relationships still has the power to wound.
The Independent
Rufus Sewell stars in this brand-new revival of Patrick Marber's much-praised play. Helmed by David Leveaux, Closer examines how at the end of the 20th century, the lives of a group of Londoners change in an instant. Part classical comedy, part melodrama, we watch as chance meetings and acts of mischief form new relationships whilst tearing down others. Exotic dancing, photography, taxis and internet chatrooms all play their part in how the characters interact, causing upheaval for some, and bliss for others.
This darkly comedic and tragic four-hander follows the fates of Dan, Alice, Larry and Anna. Dan rescues Alice from an accident with a taxi. A year later he is photographed by Anna with whom he feels a connection, which she rejects as he is in a relationship with Alice. Six months pass and Larry and Dan meet in an internet chatroom. Dan pretends to be Anna and proceeds to have internet sex with Larry - unbeknownst to him, the real Anna catches on and meets Larry the next day. They later marry.
Both Dan and Anna cheat on their partners with each other, even through Anna and Larry's marriage. Finally, one year later, they tell their partners the truth and leave their respective partners for each other. But can they truly survive as a couple after all the lies and tricks that brought them closer in the first place?
