Two louche French aristocrats play a salacious game of manipulation, seduction and humiliation in name of jealousy and revenge in this revival of Christopher Hampton's classic play, after Pierre Choderlos de Laclos' 1785 novel of the same name. Starring Dominic West, Janet McTeer and Elaine Cassidy, this tale of treacherous schemes is a sexy, clever and deliciously cruel piece of theatre and is not to be missed this winter.
More than just a dark comedy of ill-manners, Les Liaisons Dangereuses is also a fascinating look at the sheer decadence at the heart of French high society before it was brought crashing down by the Revloution.
First adapted in the 1980's, Alan Rickman and Lindsay Duncan took on the central roles of the Marquis de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont, two ruthless toffs who enjoy causing misery for the hell of it. Their targets, the innocent and married Madame de Tourvel and young Cecile de Volanges can only hold on whilst their lives and reputations are dictated by these sex-starved sociopaths.
