Tense and riveting… a gripping play that reminds one of Morgan's abiding fascination with the fallibility of power.
The Guardian
This gripping four-hander sees some of Britain and Ireland's best acting talent unite on stage: Sinead Cusack, Michelle Fairley (Game of Thrones) and Genevieve O'Reilly. Four women wait in a dictator's opulent palace for the man to have his photograph portrait taken. The women - his wife, her best friend, a Western photojournalist and an interpreter are anxious as the wait goes on; each of their lives could be in danger at any moment due to the turbulent political climate, as well as the dictator's capricious temper. Written by Abi Morgan, this play perfectly demonstrates the shaky facade of power when everything else is crumbling around them.
Directed by Robert Hastie, the action takes place in a beautifully opulent drawing room, where unseen outside, civil unrest is growing. The photographer is impatiently waiting for the President to arrive, so that she can head for the streets and get herself the scoop of a lifetime. The wife is accompanied by her hanger-on friend, and they snipe about the photographer and the interpreter in their own language - all the while trying to mask their growing terror at events. The interpreter on the other hand seems relaxed and detached, perhaps because she is dead set on purloining some valuable trinkets from the palace.
As time goes on, each woman voices her fears, and at the crux of the action, the photographer's patience is finally paid off when the wife's luck finally runs out.
