Smart, tart and bang on the money!
Charles Spencer, The Daily Telegraph
Directed by the multi-talented Jamie Lloyd, an all-star cast including Tamsin Grieg, Rupert Friend and former Bond girl, Gemma Arterton star in Douglas Carter Beane's Tony award nominated, hilarious Hollywood satire, about greed, hypocrisy, sexuality and manipulation.
Mitchell is an actor whose career is about to take off big time. Blessed with good looks, charm and an appealing sense of humour, he's the perfect leading man. Diane, his acerbic, stone hearted, Hollywood agent, knows this, and is very happy about it. She also knows that he's gay. She's not happy about that. Nor is Diane happy about the sleazy, ultra ambitious, rent boy that she finds in Mitchell's flat, and who Mitchell is plainly smitten with. And as for when Mitchell announces to her that he "wants to come out" - no leading Hollywood actor is openly gay!
Besides, Diane has plans to turn a hit play about two male lovers into a movie, once she's persuaded the writer to make a little tweak. Give the piece a happy, heterosexual ending. And Mitchell is perfect for the lead role, it'll make him a star, not to mention a lot of money. But if Mitchell chooses to tell the truth about his sexuality, his career will be in tatters, and if the writer refuses to make the tweaks, no one will want to make the film. Diane cannot, will not, allow either of these things to happen.
Author Douglas Carter Beane has been nominated for five Tony awards, but has yet to taste victory.
