One family's struggle to reconcile old-school beliefs with modern values
The Tony Award, Pulitzer Prize "Angels in America" playwright Tony Kushner's 2009 drama "The Intelligent Homosexual's Guide..." comes to Hampstead Theatre for its UK premiere this October, for a limited run. Four-time Olivier-winning director Sir Michael Boyd helms this new production. Displaying Kushner's characteristic wit throughout, we meet a retired Brooklyn longshoreman Gus who struggles to make sense of a world that he no longer recognises. This comes to a head when his adult children, spouses/lovers and grandchildren arrive for the final chaotic family reunion before he decides to die. His reason? He claims it is dementia - but we soon learn that his Marxist leanings and self-perceived obsoletion plays more a part.
With a combustible combination of love, sex, money and politics coming to the fore, Gus' very modern extended family clash with his old-school values, but even they discover that the hard-won house has kept secrets of its own, that they didn't even know. Think of Arthur Miller's Eddie Carbone from A View From The Bridge surviving that fight, and living in a profoundly confuddling new century....
