[this] witty and seductive musical is an old-world delight
The Guardian
Matthew White returns to the Menier once more after his celebrated direction of Candide, to lent his magic to the world of Amalia and Georg and their unlikely romance in 1930s Hungary. Scarlett Strallen stars, alongside Alastair Brookshaw, Les Dennis, Callum Howell, Katherine Kingsley, Dominic Tighe and Mark Umbers.
When two bickering perfumerie clerks both reply to a lonely hearts advertisement, they each find themselves falling for their mystery sweethearts. But how will they react when identities are revealed and the anonymous admirers have a great deal more in common than first thought?
The original play was written by Miklos Laszlo and has seen three major adaptations including the musical production and the 1940 film The Shop Around the Corner starring James Stewart and the 1949 Judy Garland-Van Johnson musical In the Good Old Summertime. In 1998 the story resurfaced once again in the Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan vehicle, You've Got Mail, replacing old fashioned letters with emails.
