A provocative and fast-paced comedy of the darkest nature.
Nikolai Erdman's black comedy was banned by Stalin in 1920s Russia for being anti-Communist; now it has been reimagined for Noughties' Britain by playwright and TV writer Suhayla El-Bushra and directed by Nadia Fall. We follow the desperate plight of Sam, an unemployed man who is stuck living with his girlfriend and her mother whilst his benefits stopped. Just as he decides to end it all by killing himself, he discovers that other people have to gain from his death; whether they are corrupt politicians looking to make him their cause of the day, or video-obsessed teenagers determined to increase their online following by posting something disturbing or artists looking for their next big project that would be sure to attract press attention.
With the interest around his crisis growing, Sam begins to wonder if he is worth more dead or alive to the people around him. Does nobody actually care what Sam wants or needs from them? The Suicide is a damning piece of satirical theatre that brings out the worst of the characters trying to exploit Sam to their own ends, and raises the question; How far would each of us venture to ensure our own immortality and legacy?
