In this political climate, Barker's original banned play rings true more than ever

Why See Waste?

Plays

Harley Granville Barker's controversial play is more relevant than ever!

Originally banned in its original form in 1907 by the Lord Chamberlain for being disrespectful to the Government of the day, Waste is very much the play to make all politicians squirm in their seats. Harley Granville Barker's political satire examines sleaze, cover-ups and what happens when the ranks close against you. Downton Abbey's Charles Edwards leads the play as the idealistic visionary Henry Trebell, who finds out to his cost that one's private life never truly belongs to anybody in the political sphere, and can have huge repercussions to one's ambitions. Directed by Roger Mitchell.

What is Waste about?

The story takes place within the corridors of power at a hung parliament, where a flustered Tory party are trying to push through a controversial bill to disestablish the Church of England. In a desperate attempt to seal the bill, they seek out the idealistic independent member Henry Trebell. However, Trebell has a skeleton in his closet; he is having an affair with a married woman. Entirely focussed on his great work, he is blase about his affair until the woman in question dies when her backstreet abortion goes horribly wrong.

Faced with the prospect of a public scandal, which would certainly put the scuppers on the new bill, the Tories close ranks against Trebell, who suffers a spectacular fall from grace, as well as the end of his political ambitions - hence where "Waste" comes in. With nowhere to turn, and an untouchable prospect, he takes his own life
