Chekhov's classic study of a 'superfluous man', adapted by David Hare

Why See Young Chekhov: Ivanov?

Plays

ADAPTED BY DAVID HARE

Often referred to as 'The Russian Hamlet', Chekhov's 1887 work centers on 'superflous man' Nikola Ivanov, a man whose melancholia affects all of those around him. Reputedly written in just ten days, Ivanov is seen as a direct precursor to the playwright's later masterpieces, exploring the theme of disillusionment played out amongst a cast of semi-rich nobles. Anna Chancellor (Private Lives) and Geoffrey Streatfield (The Hollow Crown) are among the cast.

Ivanov is one of three of Chekhov plays adapted by David Hare, which debuted at the Chichester Theatre Festival last year. Exploring the master's early, youthful works, this trilogy offers a thrilling new perspective into the work of the man who shaped modern theatre.

WHAT IS Ivanov ABOUT?

Provincial landowner Nikolai Ivanov is in trouble. He's up to his ears in debt to his friend Lebdeva, and his wife Anna, who converted from Judaism to Russian Orthodoxy for him yet who he now can't stand, is seriously ill with tuberculosis. Against the advice of Anna's moralising doctor, Ivanov sets off on another trip to visit the Lebdevas, whose daughter Sasha is secretly madly in love with him. What Ivanov doesn't know is that his wife and doctor are following him, and are ready to pounce the moment he steps out of line.
