Chekhov's masterful drama adapted by David Hare
David Hare (Skylight) brings Chekhov's masterpiece to back to the London stage. Written in 1895, The Seagull expertly weaves the comic and tragic in a group portrait of existential angst and unrequited love. Anna Chancellor (Private Lives) and Geoffrey Streatfield (The Hollow Crown) are among the cast.
Ivanov is one of three of Chekhov plays adapted by David Hare, which debuted at the Chichester Theatre Festival last year. Exploring the master's early, youthful works, this trilogy offers a thrilling new perspective into the work of the man who shaped modern theatre.
A group of well-heeled guests gather at the country house of a retired civil servant, to see a new avant-garde play that his young nephew has written. With a heavy emphasis on symbolism, the play is a disaster and is abandoned after the first act. With emotions running high after the aborted performance, we discover a tangle of love triangles amongst the characters, self-doubt and a rampaging pursuit of happiness that threatens to overturn everybody's beliefs and sensibilities.
