Imelda Staunton adds to her list of brilliant performances in Good People... It's a detailed yet propulsive performance that weaves brashness with heartbreak in a breath.
Dominic Maxwell, The Times
Olivier Award-winner Imelda Staunton is a veritable force of nature in her starring role as single mother Margie in David Lindsay-Abaire's Good People. After a sell-out run at the Hampstead Theatre, the play transferred to Noel Coward Theatre in April of this year for a strictly limited ten week run. Staunton (Vera Drake, Another Year) once again stars opposite Lloyd Owen (Miss Potter) in this production directed by Jonathan Kent. Tackling issues of class and economics in America with tenderness and a healthy dash of humour, Good People is an enthralling evening of escalating human drama.
Good people originally premiered on Broadway in 2011, where it was hailed as something of a modern classic. It was nominated for Best Play and Best actress at the Tony Awards, with Frances McDormand (Fargo) winning the latter for her triumphant portrayal of Margie.
Life isn't easy when you live on wrong side of the tracks in Boston, as Margie discovers trying to raise her disabled son on an meagre salary and unstable vocational record. When she loses yet another job she turns to an unlikely figure from her past, determined to do whatever it takes to take care of her family.
Lloyd Owen stars as Mike, the ex-boyfriend Margie pursues now that he has an established career as a doctor and may be the solution to her financial security woes. But does the fact that Mike shared her tough upbringing mean he will be able to empathy with her situation, let alone come to her aide?
