Not only a tour de force; it's a masterclass
The Observer
For one last time, Kevin Spacey revisits the role he played in the 1991's PBS film, and 2009's Inherit The Wind, in this one-man play about the pioneering civil rights lawyer extraordinaire Darrow, as he relives some of his greatest victories in the courtroom and treats us to his legendary wit in the process. After winning praise for his portrayal last summer, he is reviving the show for one last limited season as he says his final farewell to his Old Vic tenure as Artistic Director.
Darrow was famed especially for defending in the 1925 Scopes' 'Monkey Trial', a legal wrangling over teaching evolution in a Tennessee school, and his work in the Leopold and Loeb "Thrill Killers" trial, sucessfully arguing for their death sentences to be commuted to life behind bars.
Famed lawyer and giant of the civil rights movement, an elderly Darrow fumbles around his office, riffling through boxes as reminisces on his extraodinary career. After taking great pains to ignore the audience, he relents, and out comes pouring a wealth of memories. A staunch anti-death penalty, civil rights supporter, and pain in the neck to the Bible Belters in the southern states, Darrow wasn't afraid to cause controversy.
He drawls, he bellows, and almosts explodes, as he remembers some of the most difficult moments of his career, holding you captivated with his wit and eloquent memories.
After 10 years helming the Old Vic as artistic director, Spacey will be handing the reins over to Matthew Warchus after finishing this season. Spacey's tenure at the old Vic has garnered praise for re-vitalising the once-failing venue, and upon his departure next year, Spacey says, "I'm now planning to leave in 2015 and am determined to raise ?20m by then as an endowment fund to make the theatre fit for the 21st century" to continue ongoing renovation works.
