Inherit The Wind

Inherit The Wind at Old Vic Theatre

Why see Inherit The Wind?

Based on the famous 1925 Scopes 'Monkey' trial in which science teacher John Scopes was accused of violating a Tennessee state statute by teaching Charles Darwin's theory of evolution to his students, Inherit the Wind depicts two legal Titans who confront each other when a community puts freedom of thought on trial. It is directed by Trevor Nunn and will star Kevin Spacey.

Nunn, the former Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre, is one of Britain's most acclaimed directors who has worked across drama and musicals. His recent work includes the critically acclaimed production of Sondheim's A Little Night Music in the West End.

Spacey, who plays Henry Drummond has also starred in several productions on the Old Vic stage including A Moon For The Misbegotten, National Anthems, Richard II and Speed-The-Plow.

Brilliant Acting

Kevin Spacey and David Troughton fully embody these larger than life characters and enable us to enter into a key moment of American civil history: science vs. church, and their co-existence in modern society. With David Nunn's well-paced directing and emphasis on the timeless aspects of the piece, the immersion into the piece is almost perfect. 1/2 star downgrade only due to the all too fast jump to the end of the court hearing, but nonetheless an immensely impressive night by these two giants of theater and their equally able ensemble. ... Kevin Spacey is outstanding

Really enjoyed this play. This was my first opportunity to see Kevin Spacey on stage and he didn't disappoint, what an actor! David Troughton was superb too with a great supporting cast. Nunn is a genius, I especially loved that when the audience were filtering back after the interval that the cast were simultaneously going back to their places in the coutroom , magical! I was worried that this significant part of history may have been rather dour, but shouldn't have worried, it was told in a lighthearted way that didn't take away from the impact that the trial had then and now. ...
