A powerful response to an international tragedy
When the world faces turmoil from every angle, its easy to forget that light exists in even the darkest of places. London-based Chaskis Theatre Company is holding a candle up in these troubled times, presenting a collection of thought-provoking short plays written in response to the devastating June 12th Pulse Night Club shooting in Orlando, Florida.
Selected from over 70 pieces by emerging and established voices including Neil Labute, Winter Miller and Anders Lustgarten, the chosen plays respectfully explore the lives of the victims, their families and the LGBT community. Aside from the heart-rending consequences of the tragedy, there are moments of hope and laughter throughout, reminding us of the humanity behind the statistics. All proceeds from the show will be donated to Stonewall, a charity that advocates LGBT rights, offering a network of support in the UK.
Taking their name from the Incan word for a highly-trained and physically fit group of messengers from the ancient civilisation, Chaskis is the UK's foremost interpreter of works from the Americas, bearing new stories, practices and cultural perspectives across the Atlantic. RELATABLE Emotional inspiring
A stripped back, simple staging only serves to strengthen this.
It is critical, now more than ever, that art functions as a response to real-world events and for this I commend London-based theatre company Chaskis.
