Cuttin' It raises awareness of this issue in the best possible way - by portraying the stories of two individuals that represent the experience of thousands.

One of the most urgent issues to face our young women today, the horrific phenomenon of female genital mutilation (FGM) provides the basis of this new drama by Charlene James. Telling the story through the eyes of two Somalian expat teenagers in today's Britain, we see first-hand how this cruel procedure affects families from different Muslim backgrounds. In a collaboration between Birmingham Repertory Theatre and the Young Vic, this is a timely drama that raises awareness for all.
Meet Muna and Iqra, two Somalian schoolgirls who travel on the same bus, but who appear to be the complete opposite to each other. Whilst vivacious Muna dresses in popular high-street brands and keeps up to date with celebrity news, Iqra is quiet, isolated and wears hand-me-downs and charity shop clothes. After having never spoken before on their journeys together, one day they break the ice and get to know each other. Despite outward appearances, we discover that both girls' harbour the painful trauma of having undergone FGM, and how it has affected them both psychologically.
