Magnetic Maxine Peake is bedevilled in morality play
The Guardian
Maxine Peake stars in this darkly witty nightmare fantasy as she plays a German woman with money woes, watching as her native Europe descends into financial freefall around her. After picking up a mysterious and sinister man in a bar, she finds that his offer of money, although insulting at first would have helped her out. He claims that he is the Devil - but is this a figment of her imagination?
Later, she and her pregnant sister must flee Europe as an economic boom in Africa beckons them both, in a stark reversal of the economic migration often covered in the press to the detriment of refugees, Dana and Jasmine are in fact fleeing Berlin, in our world, the financial powerhouse of Europe, but here in the midst of a crumbling economy. Along the way Dana experiences confusion and seeks solace with an unsettling librarian, who seems to have a self-help book for every occasion. Is he real? Or part of her imagination too? And will she make the perilous journey across the seas to hope and salvation?
