A shocking new short play by Caryl Churchill makes its world premiere at the Royal Court Theatre's Jerwood Stage this July. Taking on the controversial anti-homosexuality laws recently passed in Uganda, this new work examines the prevailing attitudes towards same-sex relationships in Africa, showing the prejudice and fear in stark relief. Never one to shy away from contemporary, controversial subjects, her left-wing leaning work often portrays the abuse of power by those in charge, especially in themes of gender and sexuality. Her previous works include 1972's Owners; a two-act drama castigating the selfishness of capitalist culture at the expense of the poor. However it is her 1982 celebrated feminist play Top Girls that made her mark on the theatre scene, winning her an Obie Award in the process.
