'I found in her story a theme that has sometimes appeared in my work before: the Outsider figure. Anastasia seems to me to be a supreme example of this'.

Kenneth MacMillan

Why See Anastasia?

BalletDance & Ballet

one of the 20th century's biggest mysteries

Originally conceived as a gripping one-act ballet for the Deutsche Opera Ballet back in 1967, Kenneth MacMillan seized the chance to extend the story of Anastasia into a haunting and expressive full-length work when he became the Royal Ballet's Director a few years later. Based on the true story of Anna Anderson, believed she was the lost Romanov princess. As she battles to separate fantasy from memory, she is visited by nightmares old and new in this exquisite production that leaves you to make up your own mind about Anna's faith and her origins.

Trapped in an insane asylum in 1920s Berlin, Anna, a troubled young woman comes to believe she is Anastasia, the youngest daughter of Tsar Nicholas II and thought to be the only family member to escape their brutal execution in 1918, when the Russian Revolution was in full swing. Adding to this, Anna is plagued by the tragedy of her new life, a child disappeared and a husband lying dead. Is she truly the real Anastasia, or are her beliefs an elaborate and heartbreaking coping mechanism?

Set to Martinu's Sixth Symphony and works from Tchaikovsky, this searingly emotional tale fuses two of MacMillan's great loves, Royal ballet tradition and German expressionism to create one of the choreographer's most poignant and unforgettable works.
