Karita Mattila reprises her 'glorious' 'mesmerizing' performance of the title role in Christof Loy's acclaimed production
The Guardian, The Telegraph
A stunning combination of operatic tragedy and comic farce, Ariadne auf Naxos returns to the Royal Opera House for a limited three performances only this month! When a wealthy patron commissions two very different performances to entertain after dinner, he has one command; they must be performed at the same time, so that he and his guests can all enjoy the firework display after. What ensues is a rich mix of styles, encompassing both 18th century Strauss and Eighties' grunge.
This eye-catching production explores the role of art in society and is juxtaposed with love versus promiscuity between the characters and provides a colorful joint storyline between the opera and play elements, something that has remained constant since being reworked in 1916 to become a full opera
