Two British ballets inspired by science and fantasy
Two British ballets inspired by science and fantasy make up this double bill, by esteemed choreographers Alastair Marriott and Wayne McGregor. Connectome is based loosely on the theories of neuroscientist Dr Sebastian Seung. Here, personality is determined not by genes but by our neural connections, the map of the brain, or Connectome. Here we see a woman who shapes her identity through the connections she makes with other dancers. McGregor's ballet Raven Girl is based on the novel by acclaimed writer Audrey Niffenegger and follows the half-human child of a mortal man and a raven, who desires wings, with tragic consequences for those around her.
Both ballets are enhanced by video and lighting design, with Es Devlin and video designer Luke Halls providing visuals for Connectome and the gothic-inspired designs of Raven Girl are courtesy of Vicki Mortimer and atmospheric lighting by Lucy Carter and Simon Bennison.
