Verdi ’s music, glorious singing, spectacular settings and great drama: Il trovatore returns with all the colour and passion that has made it one of the most popular of all operas.
The Royal Opera ’s acclaimed production sets the story of blazing love, jealousy and revenge against the political tensions of 19th-century Italy using the epic style of Visconti’s cinema, realized in grandly scaled sets and rich costumes. Fuelled by raids and rescues, prisoners and poisons, this is a tense story that races inexorably towards a final tragic revelation: while the rebel leader Manrico and his lover Leonora battle against the predatory plans of Conte di Luna, the gypsy Azucena keeps a dark secret.
The cast of internationally acclaimed and awardwinning singers includes Roberto Alagna and Walter Fraccaro sharing the role of Manrico with Sondra Radvanovsky as the doomed object of his love.
Carlo Rizzi once more conducts for The Royal Opera a score full of famous numbers, including the great aria ‘Di quella pira’ and the rousing Anvil Chorus, an operatic showcase not just for the main characters but also for the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House and The Royal Opera Chorus. Il trovatore makes for an evening of powerful voices from star names alongside grand emotions in grand settings.
