An abandoned child narrowly escapes becoming the Duchess of Krakenthorp through the love of the regiment who saved her life. Donozetti's sweet comic opera nearly never made it; it was originally panned by French critics, but now is one of the most popular operas in ROH's repetoire, having seen performances by Ann Widdicombe and Dawn French as the formidable Marquesse in previous Laurent Pelly productions of the opera.
