A Visceral Retelling Of Donzetti's Tragic Masterpiece

Renowned director Katie Mitchell OBE's rousing 2015 production of Donzetti's classic tragedy returns to the Royal Opera House stage this Autumn, infusing the tale of the headstrong and ultimately doomed heroine with new, visceral life. Mitchell's adaptation is filled with thrilling, violent and poignant moments as Lucia fights for love and survival, emphasised by Vicki Mortimer's breathtaking split screen stage design.

The story follows the titular protagonist as she rails against the injustice of her arranged marriage. Upon learning that his sister has fallen in love with his archenemy, Enrico arranges her union to his associate Arturo, convincing Lucia that her love Edgardo has been unfaithful. A grisly end lies in wait for all on her fateful wedding night...
