His dancing is mercurial, his characters superbly realised
The Independent
Easts meets West in the return of this mach-lauded dance production which fuses Spanish Flamenco with Indian kathak. Premiering last year in London, Torobaka literally means bull and cow in Spanish, both highy auspicious animals in Spanish and Indian traditions. Akram Khan remains one of the most respected and celebrated dance artists of today, and his collaboration with Israel Galvan, a multi-award winning contemporary flamenco dancer is a treat for fusion dance fans.
Rather than imitating each other's dance styles, the fusion of both the kathak and flamenco allows each dancer to better understand the movement of the other, making it a truly collaborative experience.
London-born Khan has worked with both the avante garde and wider contemporary artists. For instance he co-starred with Juliette Binoche in a dance-drama piece called in-i at the National Theatre in 2008 , and in 2006, he was invited by Kylie Minogue to choreograph part of her Showgirl tour, which was set in an Indian temple setting.
