"It has been a long held ambition of mine to bring The Red Shoes to the stage as a dance/drama. It is set in the theatrical world of a touring dance company...My challenge will be to capture some of that surreal, sensuous quality within the more natural theatre setting."
Matthew Bourne returns with a new show this Christmas, a self-confessed love letter to the theatre; The Red Shoes. Based on the 1948 Powell and Pressburger film, which is in turn based on the tragic fairytale by Hans Christian Anderson, The Red Shoes is the story of a talented young dancer who finds herself torn between love and her career, with heartbreaking consequences.
Starring Ashley Shaw as Victoria Page, the production will reuinte Bourne with some of his frequent collaborators Lez Brotherston, lighting designer Paule Constable and sound designer Paul Groothuis and will have as score mixed by Terry Davies, from music by Bernard Herrmann, composer for classic thillers such as Psycho, Vertigo and Citizen Kane.
