Tissues at the ready, with this enthralling adaptation by Joel Horwood....
The Sam Wanamaker Playhouse on the Southbank plays host to Hans Christian Anderson's immortal tale, possibly in the most perfect candlelit setting. Directed by Emma Rice and adapted to this new setting by Joel Horwood, this touching winter fairytale of the poor matchgirl forced to sell her wares in the blistering cold is told through the ingenius use of candlelight and puppetry, in this special Christmas-time show for children and families.
Forced by her brutal father to sell matchsticks to passersby on a blisteringly cold New Years' Eve, a little girl is close to freezing and in the throes of early hypothermia. Desperate to keep warm, she finds herself a small corner, and attempts to warm herself by striking a match. When the light flares, she envisions a story, and follows it as we do - until it goes out. Striking a match one after the other, we and the matchgirl are treated to different fables, magic and some harsh truths along the way - until they all run out. Will somebody take pity on the poor child before it's too late?
The original version of the Little Matchgirl sees the girl envisioning Christmas and her loving grandmother - finally succumbing to the elements and her soul collected to heaven. Prepare to bring plenty of tissues with you!
