You can catch Cabaret at the Playhouse Theatre, showing Until September 28, 2024
Closed January 19, 2013
A refreshing and hugely atmospheric reinterpretation of a musical theatre classic which stills offers food for thought.
Lisa Martland, The Stage
Cheeky and sensual, shady and harrowing, Cabaret dances the line between sexually charged decadence and dark foreboding. With the sharply satirical edge jibing politics and the toe-tapping smash-hit musical score, it's no wonder that Cabaret is considered Kander and Ebb's greatest musical.
Rufus Norris' revival of Cabaret sees pop star Will Young as the master of ceremonies and Michelle Ryan, of EastEnders fame, in the leading role of Sally Bowles.
Since its Broadway premiere in 1966 and the acclaimed move version, Cabaret has been showered in awards, both stage and screen, including eight Oscars, seven BAFTAs, 13 Tonys and two Oliviers.
Set in 1931, Caberet opens up a world of pre-Nazi liberalism in Weimar Berlin. The story is about Sally Bowles, a young English cabaret performer, and her bittersweet relationship with Cliff Bradshaw. She meets Cliff, an American writer at the seedy Kit Kat Klub, her place of work, and later moves in with him.
Cliff is befriended by Ernst Ludwig who helps him find cheap lodging in the boarding house of Fraulein Schneider. Fraulein's relationship with Herr Schultz, an elderly Jewish fruit vendor, is blossoming yet harrowingly doomed. Ernst, a money launderer and undercover member of the Nazi party, tries to involve Cliff in smuggling. Meanwhile, the Nazis are gaining power, there are shifts in politics and the glorious freedom the Berlin enjoyed is about to change.Previews from: 3 October 2012
