After over 40 years, Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim's musical powerhouse Gypsy graces the West End once more! With Imelda Staunton as ambitious stage mother Rose, this cautionary journey back to the declining vaudeville scene of 1920's Depression-hit America, details just how far a mother can push her children in the search for stardom.
Following a sold-out run at Chichester Festival Theatre in 2014, Gypsy transfers to the Savoy Theatre from March 2015.
Based on the memoirs of a Gypsy Rose Lee, a successful burlesque performer, Gypsy is a musical fable. The story follows Momma Rose and her two children, June and Louise. Convinced they can make it in showbiz as a fresh-faced double act, she touts them up and down the country during the Depression. But as the light of Vaudeville fades in favour of something more titillating, the girls grow up and start answering back. Soon she realises her blind determination may have cost her more than just fame and fortune, but her relationship with her children.
From Bette Milder to Angela Lansbury, Momma Rose is widely held up as one of musical theatre's greatest and most complex role, one Imelda Staunton is more than capable of filling!
