A faithful rendition of the great story
Daily Mail
Who really won the Trojan War? asks Simon Armitage in this shocking reimagining of Homer's Iliad. Picking up where Homer had left off, we see the mortals and Gods squabble amongst themselves for the spoils of war, and to declare themselves victors, whilst the battlefields and rivers run red with the blood of thousands. A must for lovers of classic mythology.
After the endless battles and Achilles' fatal heel shot, Hector's death by dragging, the final end of the mythic ten-year war has left all exhausted and weary. We go to the backrooms of Priam's palace, where Helen and her adopted royal family deal with the aftermath, the battle camp where Agamemnon rues the cost to his army, and Mount Olympus, where the gods compete against each other.
Pride, lies and betrayal still run amok, and on Mount Olympus the situation is not much better, as the gods squabble with each other, each wanting to claim victory. The end result is the awful realisation on all sides about what the war has cost them in terms of love, family and reputation.
The final message of the play serves as both reminder and warning for the future of the everlasting cycles of war and conflict, fuelled by revenge, pride and lies.
