Why See Allegro?

Musicals

The Rodgers and Hammerstein classic returns!

This heartwarming 1947 family-oriented musical by theatre giants Rodgers and Hammerstein is a fantastic way to introduce newcomers to their impressive catelogue of work. Chronicling 40 years from birth to middle-age of one man, Joseph Taylor Jr, as he aims for vast fame and fortunes in the medical profession - before personal events force him to re-evaluate the most important things in life; love and family.

Staged at the Southwark Playhouse Theatre and directed by Charing Cross Theatre's Thom Southerland, this is the third musical collaboration between the legendary composer and lyricist after Oklahoma and Carousel, this time choosing to focus on one man's struggles to make good in a fast-changing America. Vastly pared down in sets compared to their previous works, Allegro makes use of simple props and projections to suggest changes in time and location. To date there has been no large-scale West End or even European production of Allegro, but Southwark Playhouse's reputation for successfully reviving new and little-known productions makes this one to catch.
