Tangram Theatre Company return with a brilliantly funny anti-pantomime for the holidays

Why See The Dragon?

Christmas ShowsComedy Theatre

THIS YEAR'S ANTI-PANTOMIME WILL SET THE STAGE ALIGHT!

The critically acclaimed Tangram Theatre Company, who gave us Fuente Ovejuna and Richard III, are coming back to Southwark Playhouse with this brand-new anti-pantomime spin on Yevgeny Schwartz's fantastically humourous 1943 critique of Stalinist Russia. Based on The Dragon' of Schwartz, which was written in Leningrad in 1943, the dragon of the title represents the Fascism that threatens the town and the world.

WHAT IS THE DRAGON ABOUT?

When the knight Lancelot travels afar to the East, he falls in love with a beautiful girl upon first sight - unfortunately she is due to be sacrificed to a dragon the very next day. As a true knight would, he challenges the beast to a duel - only to find that the townspeople actually love the dragon, and the sleazy mayor and his son are determined to keep everything under the dragon's control.

A play very much for our times, this play sharply lampoons the idea that people love dictators and the populace's desire to let others do our thinking for us. This stripped back play is performed by just ten actors in everyday clothes with no set and no theatre lights. Think of it as Stalin-meets-The Princess Bride-Meets Team America.
