A peerless take on Wagner's great comedy

Why See Mastersingers Of Nuremburg?

Classical & Opera

A LONDON PREMIERE STRAIGHT FROM THE WELSH NATIONAL OPERA

A true Wagner epic, The Mastersingers of Nuremberg sees a brand-new production by Richard Jones of the Welsh National Opera, in London for the first time. Jones stages a wonderfully witty and clear re-imagining of Wagner's comedy-drama about the 16th-century guild of amateur poets and musicians (the Mastersingers), where there is a fraught tension between creative spirit and conformity in a place obsessed with rules.

WAGNER STEPS AWAY FROM THE SUPERNATURAL

"Mastersingers" differs greatly from the rest of Wagner's operas in that it is the only comedy among his mature operas and is centered on a historically true time and place rather than a mythical or legendary setting like Tristan & Ysolde, and based on a totally original story by Wagner himself.
