Verdi's visceral and dramatic revenge tale has been transported from 19th century Seville to the turmoil of Franco's Spain where the cursed di Vargas family are irretrievably torn apart in the pursuit of love and hatred.
When Leonora di Vargas falls for the poor but well-meaning noble Don Alvaro, he father, whose marital aspirations for his daughter are higher, is utterly furious. When Leonora and Alvaro attempt to elope, the Marquis of Calatrava interrupts their flight and in the resulting struggle is killed accidentally by his son-in-law to be.
Heading out on the run, Leonora and Alvaro are pursued by her brother Don Carlos, hellbent on avenging his father's death. Disguises are donned and the couple go their separate ways. She to a monastery, he to the army, hoping for safety in anonymity. But seemingly not even the horrors of war can dampen Don Carlos' thirst for retribution. Can they all escape their fate? Or will the battle for honour hasten them to their deaths?
