A world premiere from John Adams
John Adams' newest work receives its world premiere this season at ENO. Directed by Peter Sellars, this latest opera draws inspiration from both Biblical text and works from 20th century authors such as Primo Levi and takes a look at Christ's resurrection from the perspective of Mary Magdalene and Martha, two figures largely ignored. The narrative switches back and forth between Biblical times and the recent past, and includes events such as the Arab Spring, making for a truly contemporary opera.
"Gospel" is the latest ENO-staged work from Adams, who in 2012 penned the well-received "The Death of Klinghoffer". Mezzo-soprano Patricia Bardon, a regular of the ENO staging leads the production as Mary Magdalene, whilst American-based mezzo soprano Meredith Arwady joins her singing the role of Martha.
The production is designed by George Tsypin, who was lead designer for the opening ceremony of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, resuming his long-standing partnership with Sellars, which began with Theodora at Glyndebourne.
