Why See Sister Act?

Musicals

NUN ON THE RUN!

Hearty, sparkling and thoroughly entertaining, Sister Act is a feel-good story about the power of friendship. The musical comedy is fortified with an original musical score by Alan Menken, Tony- and 8-time Oscar award winner, who's others works include Little Shop of Horrors, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid and Enchanted. Written by Cheri and Bill Steinkellner, additional book material by Douglas Carter Beane and with lyrics by Glenn Slater, Sister Act is based on the 1992 hit film comedy.

WHAT IS SISTER ACT ABOUT?

Deloris van Cartier is a small-time lounge singer who dreams of stardom. She is bitterly disappointed when she realises her gangster boyfriend Curtis Shank, who owns the nightclub where she performs, is not going to arrange for her to meet a record producer, as she had hoped. Frustrated she goes to break off their relationship, but instead witnesses he and his gang commit murder. Shank threatens to find her and kill her. Terrified she runs to the police. The police send her a the ultimate hiding place - The Holy Order of the Little Sisters of Our Mother of Perpetual Faith, a convent!

The sassy singer once known as Lady Fabulous, now Sister Mary Clarence, soon bores of the straight and narrow lifestyle, the routines and the overwrought Mother Superior. After discovering how discordant the choir is, Deloris is given charge of it. With her disco razzmatazz, singing experience and big personality, she inspires the nuns and the church, and finds herself backed by a new found power, the Sister Hood.
