The Wizard of Oz doesn't officially open until the March 1 however London Theatreland attended its third preview, a tantalizing glimpse of what to expect from Andrew Lloyd Webber's latest musical treat. There is a pot of gold at the end of this rainbow with advance ticket sales already at over ten million.
Unless you've been stuck under a log cabin with just your legs sticking out you bound to have followed some of Lord Webber's TV search for Dorothy in BBC1 talent show Over the Rainbow. Reprising the role made famous by Judy Garland in the 1939 movie classic is not an easy feat. Danielle Hope's rendition of Over the Rainbow was everything I hoped it would be and probably the reason that tin man lost his heart in the first place. This young lady was born to slip her feet into Dorothy's ruby red slippers.
Kansas farm girl and her dog Toto are swept up in their home by a rather fierce and dizzying cinematic tornado and whirl into space and down into the Land of Oz. After meeting sparkly Glinda, Dorothy sets off along the twisting yellow brick road to the Emerald City seeking the Wizard of Oz's help to get home. On her travels, she makes friends with a Scarecrow, a Tin Man and a cowardly Lion. The cowardly lion thunder thighs, a big proud chest and ginger beard was my favorite character. The trio inhabit their characters with incredible physicality and are a delight to watch.
Hannah Waddingham makes a fabulous Wicked Witch of the West. According to the shows choreographer Arlene Phillips so convincing is she that some of the little ones playing little munchkins were reluctant to appear with her because they were so scared. If you find the Wicked Witch scary do close your eyes when the evil flying monkeys come onto stage. Her gothic palace is stunning in design.
The Palladium's double revolving stage has been reinstalled for the technically complicated production. With only a few technical glitches (blamed on poor little Toto the dog) to be polished before the official opening this show promises to be outstanding.
