Why See Marguerite?

STELLAR PERFORMANCES AND HIGHLY ACCLAIMED CREATORS IN THIS WORLD PREMIERE

From the original creative team behind Les Miserables, Marguerite is the new musical based on the tragic 1840s romantic novel by Alexandre Dumas fils, La Dame aux Camelias. The original follows the true story of Marie Duplessis, a woman who rose out of poverty and became the most feted courtesan in nineteenth century Paris. This adaptation moves the setting foward to 1940s German-occupied Paris, where Marguerite, a 40 year-old ex-cabaret singer and the mistress of a Gestapo commandant, has a dangerous affair with Armand, a young pianist who is involved with the French resistance.

The beautiful new musical shows the danger caused by the self-absorbed lovers in a love story within a bigger political conflict.

Marguerite is the collaborative work of a number of highly acclaimed artists. Co-written by Alain Boublin and Claude-Michel Schonberg (Les Miserables, Miss Saigon and Martin Guerre), with lyrics by Alain Boublil and Herbert Kretzmer (Les Miserables), and music by Michel Legrand, the triple Oscar-winning musical legend (Windmills Of Your Mind, Yentl, Summer of '42), Marguerite is directed by Jonathan Kent. Ruthie Henshall stars as Marguerite and Julian Ovenden as Armand.
