William Hoffman's culturally important play celebrates its 30th anniversary
To celebrate Pride In London, Trafalgar Studios welcomes the West End transfer of William M. Hoffman's As Is, after a sell-out run at the Finborough Theatre in 2013, complete with a new cast and production design. As Is shatters the apathy and ignorance surrounding AIDS during the 1980s where it is set, with the two main characters played sensitively by Steven Webb and David Poyner. On this, the 30th anniversary of it's Broadway premiere, it is once again staged at a time when the prevalence of this debilitating disease is claiming more victims than ever.
The scene is set in 1985 New York City with a young writer Rich, is breaking up with his longtime lover, Saul, a professional photographer, after finally gaining success in his work. However, Rich's new life with his new lover is cut brutally short when he tests positibe for a t terrifying new disease: AIDS. Spurned by his new love, Rich is forced to return to Saul for comfort and safety as he begins the wait of its dreadful progress.
Hoffman's play comprises a colourful mosaic of short, yet brilliantly conceived scenes that blend humour, poignance and dazzling theatricality in its full. We get to experience the trajectory of Rich's relationship with friends and family, the cold and dismissive treatment of him by his medical staff who are supposed to care for him and the wider New York gay community in all its diversity, during a time of fear and ignorance.
