A highly accomplished look at faith and wartime memories
The Guardian
Former Likely Lad James Bolan teams up with ex-Eastender Steve John Shepherd in a darkly comic and disturbing tour-de-force that confronts us to face our demons. Full of gritty realism, William Ivory's play is a testament to the fragility of old age, as well as unexpected courage. Transferring from the Park Theatre.
Aging WW2 RAF gunner Jimmy is in failing health, and requires the help of a care assistant. Enter David, a mysterious younger man with an equally enigmatic and difficult past; he is desperately trying to turn his life around for the better. As the two men strike up a rapport, Jimmy is increasingly subjected to terrifying flashbacks to his night-time bombing raids in the moonlight. With the elderly man in a state David must find his strength to support Jimmy, and finds that the positive changes he has made is tested to breaking point.
With Jimmy's flashbacks brought to vivid life using loud sound effects and strobe lighting to evoke the moonlit bombing raids, the audience is transported into the midst of his adrenaline-filled missions.
