Why See Buried Child?

Plays

PULITZER PRIZE-WINNING DRAMA

Ed Harris (A History of Violence) and Amy Madigan (Field of Dreams) lead the cast of Sam Shepard's powerful play, which transfers to London following a wildly successful run in New York earlier this year. A vivid work which careens from dark comedy one moment to tragedy the next, Buried Child thoroughly deconstructs the mythical American Heartland by way of Shepard's trademark naturalistic dialogue. Originally premiering in New York in 1978, it won its author the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and catapulted him to worldwide fame.

Presented by the New Group creative team, Buried Child is the second production to hit London this year, following on from Jesse Eisenberg's The Spoils.

WHAT IS BURIED CHILD ABOUT?

Dodge and Halie are a farming couple barely eking out an existence in 1970's Illinois. Sharing their farmhouse are their two sons, Tilden and Bradley, both of whom have plenty of troubles of their own. Into the picture comes Vince, a young man who arrives at the house claiming to be Tilden's son, yet neither his supposed parent or grandparents recognise him. The mystery of Vince's true identity is eventually solved, but not before the family's dark and troubled history of revealed.
