Blondel

Closed July 15, 2017

I'm delighted Blondel is returning to the stage. It was one of the most enjoyable projects of my career, and I've always felt Stephen Oliver's wonderful music deserved a larger audience than it reached back in 1983 when the show first ran.

Why See Blondel?

MusicalsComedy Theatre

Tim Rice's hilarious medieval musical revived!

Tim Rice's 1983 musical was in fact his first collaboration without Andrew Lloyd-Webber, with the music instead provided by Stephen Oliver and Mathew Pritchard. Inspired in part by the life of the afore-named French troubadour, it takes place during the Third Crusade, and features some very familiar characters from English folklore and history alike. This new revival heads to the Union Theatre this June, with direction by Sasha Regan and choreographed by Chris Whittaker, with the cast yet to be announced!

"King Richard is restless for war and announces that he is going to teach Saladin a strong lesson. Unfortunately, this leaves the country, and his court in jeopardy as he leaves Prince John behind as Regent. The struggling court musician Blondel, is forced to stay behind to write songs in praise of John, to his distaste. And to make matters worse, he is separated from his sweetheart Fiona, who was ordered to accompany the King as part of his laundry service. However Blondel sees a chance to regain his life when the King is captured by the Duke of Austria (having not made it to the Middle East) - he sets off across the Channel and the continent to save Fiona, the King and of course England in the process. However he is in turn accosted and accompanied by some very odd characters indeed!
