Puppetry, magic and friendship rule, as Stiles and Drewe's Olivier-winning musical returns after 20 years!
First hatched in 1997, this charming musical adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson's The Ugly Duckling by Stiles and Drewe actually beat Disney's The Lion King to the 2000 Best New Musical Olivier Award when it premiered in London at the National Theatre in 1999. Now to celebrate its 20th anniversary, this charming revival promotes tolerance and acceptance of others, making it more timely than ever! A fabulously funny musical for all the family to enjoy and digest, join Ugly the duckling as he tires of his sibling's incessant bullying for his different looks, and as he journeys on a path towards acceptance, finding new friends along the way!
The brainchild of lyricist Anthony Drewe and playwright George Stiles was their first collaboration, and was according to Drew, written "in response to the reaction that my young mixed–race nephews were receiving at school, because their skin was of a different colour". The pair have since gone onto create other successful shows including 2016's Half A Sixpence, and are also launching their musical adaptation of The Wind in the Willow at the London Palladium this summer.
