A whale of a tale!
Cameron Mackintosh
Following the West End's love for all things childlike following Matilda, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the upcoming School Of Rock, Cameron Mackintosh is bringing back anarchic school-themed musical Moby Dick back to the London stage in a brand-new revival production for the first time since 1992. First playing in the West End's Piccadilly Theatre, it only played for four months due to critical reviews not understanding it's appeal; fortunately public opinion was massively more popular and it sailed out of the West End on a high. This time, it will be staged at the The New Union Theatre in Southwark, celebrating its 25th anniversary!
Think of it as St Trinians meets Herman Melville; the name of the game is for the girls and staff of St Godley's Academy For Young Ladies to raise enough money to save their beloved school from closure. Their plan? To stage a full-scale theatrical production of Herman Melville's iconic novel Moby Dick. In the school's swimming pool, naturally. What could possibly go wrong?
Aided and sometimes hindered by their clueless headmistress (to be played by an unnamed male actor as per the show's tradition), the girls face a race against time to stage their production in a wild tale of sauce, double entendre and unruly antics that would make any school teacher blush. And there's a special treat in store for schoolchildren coming to see the show - if you turn up in school uniform, you get to sit ON-STAGE, and take part in the show itself! Now how's that for audience participation....
