Why See Hand to God?

PlaysComedy Theatre

THIS TONY NOMINEE comes to london!

Following a tremendously successful run on Broadway, this black comedy about a devilish puppet let loose on a Christian theatre group makes its West End debut in 2016. Hand to God is a by turns hilarious and disturbing piece which garnered glowing critical notices during its staging across the pond. Variety praised it as "screamingly funny" while The New York Times' Charles Isherwood called it a "terrific, scary-funny play".

Harry Melling (Harry Potter's Dudley Dursley) stars as Jason and Tyrone, alongside Janie Dee, Neil Pearson, Jemima Rooper and Kevin Mains.

WHAT IS HAND TO GOD ABOUT?

In the small town of Cypress, Texas, Margery is cajoling her group of unwilling participants to rehearse for an upcoming Christian puppet show. Among the reluctant volunteers is her son Jason, a shy delicate creature who harbours a secret crush for another of the puppeteers, Jessica. The rehearsal is thrown into chaos when Jason's hand puppet Tyrone seemingly takes on a life of his own, becoming a foul-mouthed, and increasingly vicious alter ego whom Jason is unable to control.

What we thought

Rude crude FUNNY

Broadway's latest offering to satiate the appetite of Book of Mormon and Avenue Q fans

Any play that moves from Off-Broadway to Broadway to the West End is bound to have some hype attached. Add to that a controversial subject matter and the inclusion of a demonic sock puppet, and you’ve got a real conversation starter!
